For centuries chuck wagon has been part of the American history. During the age of cowboys, chuck wagons were used to transport heavy load from one place to another. In other words, they were mobile kitchens loaded with necessary equipment and groceries to supply and shelter hungry cowboys.
Even though this tradition ended a century ago, you can still find a chuck wagon, and you don’t have to build a time machine or rob a museum. On the other hand, if you have chuck wagon in your possession, then you can turn this small wheel into a comfortable house.
Let us show you how!
Determine the purpose
When you are making this type of transformation, you should know the purpose. For example, do you want to remodel chuck wagon for your kid, or do you want a nice and calm place only for yourself?
Of course, you’ll have to set it up on your property or adapt it to be a modern camp trailer. However, the second option involves a lot of time and money. Therefore, if you are on a limited budget, you should stick to the first solution.
Clean the wagon
Since they are made of wood, chuck wagons tend to decay very fast. One of the first things you should do is to clean the interior and exteriors. This may include various tools, electrical sander, drill, wood cutting machine, and so on.
Your goal is to get the wood clean and prepare it for painting. Nowadays, there are a lot of paints, which are water and sun-resistant, so they can serve you as excellent protection, and prevent decay.
When going to the craft store, explain what type of paint your need and for that purpose. The salesman should recommend the best solution.
Set up walls and roof
Depending on a model, a traditional chuck wagon is usually an open unit. It doesn’t have walls, nor roof. However, if you want to transform this wagon into a house, then you’ll need to build everything.
Luckily, since it’s a small space, it doesn’t involve a lot of work. However, you will need wooden boards, nails or screws, measuring tape, and wood cutting machine.
As we already mentioned, chuck wagons are often small units, and this doesn’t leave you a lot of space to experiment. In most cases, you’ll have only one tiny room, which you can decorate to fit your needs.
For example, you can set up a couple of chairs and a desk, or choose to place a comfortable armchair where you can rest. Additionally, you can install TV inside and use chuck wagon as a retreat, when you need some time alone.
